Ph.D. Program

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Electrical Engineering aims to prepare graduates for industrial or academic research in the fields of Communication, Electronics, and Power Engineering. The program focuses on producing skilled researchers who can contribute in technological advancements and propose solutions to challenges faced by the practitioners and researchers of the field.

Educational objectives of the program:

The PhD in Electrical Engineering will strive to provide a conducive environment for independent and/or collaborative research. The objectives of the program are:

  • to equip scholars with necessary knowledge, relevant tools and techniques so that they can significantly contribute in the field of study by conducting quality research
  • to prepare scholars so that they can effectually disseminate results in form of written and oral presentation
  • to produce skilled professionals who can take up the challenges associated with the advancement of engineering and technology in industry or in academia

Learning outcomes of the program:

PhD scholars who successfully complete their PhD in Electrical Engineering will be able to:

  • Perform advance research that is grounded in theory, practice and further extends the existing research in the field
  • Communicate effectively both in oral and written formats to a diverse audience
  • Produce quality research that have a positive impact toward the welfare and betterment of society
  • Collaborate with the peers in the domain of Electrical Engineering to integrate diverse perspectives

Scope of the Program

Electrical Engineering being one of the core fields of engineering is perennial in terms of scope and job prospects. Through the quest for a doctorate in electrical engineering, students in the Department of Electrical Engineering (DEE) can work with driven people in their relevant fields. They will figure out how to function inside a lab setting and have a decent comprehension of how to approach directing their own free research. The individuals who approach securing a PhD in electrical engineering will have broad information about electrical frameworks and equipment, giving them a wide scope of abilities. This will permit them to be the top candidates in numerous industry positions, notwithstanding scholarly and research openings, while staying serious in a consistently developing field.

The graduates of the PhD Electrical Engineering program are expected to be employed in electrical engineering positions in academia as well as in industry including (but not limited to) design engineers, test engineers, characterization engineers, applications engineers, field engineers, hardware engineers, process engineers, control and power engineers, research and development departments. In a nutshell, the PhD Electrical Engineering program will provide the graduates with broad as well as in-depth technical education necessary for productive employment in the public or private sector. The program is designed towards development of understanding of advanced issues important for current and future needs of the region. The program at DEE, UAJK will offer an understanding of the breadth of education and depth of training necessary for leadership in this profession. Besides, the graduates are expected to demonstrate commitment to ethical practices, community service and societal contribution.

Semester Wise Break-Down

Semester Wise Distribution along with Credits of the program:

The PhD program consists of 18 credit hours of course work and 24 credit hours of research work. Coursework should be completed in the first two semesters. After successful completion of coursework, a PhD scholar is required to appear in the comprehensive examination. After passing comprehensive examination PhD scholar can register for the research phase by registering PhD Thesis. The first milestone in research phase is to prepare and submit a research Proposal under the guidance of a supervisor. The scholar will appear before a panel of examiners to defend the research proposal. After successful defense, the scholar will carry out his/her research and complete total 24 credits of research. The scholar will present the research finding in the form of a written thesis, which shall be evaluated as per HEC and UAJK rules. Scheme of studies for the program is as follows:

Semester Wise Distribution of Credits : PhD (EE) Program
Normal Duration 6-10 semesters
Taught Courses* 18 Credit Hours
Thesis ** 24 Credit Hours
Comprehensive Examination (Written and Oral)*** S/U basis
Total 42 Credit Hours

*The scholar must complete his/her coursework in minimum two semesters.

**The scholar must present a thesis progress report before the evaluation committee.

***The scholar must pass his/her coursework to appear in comprehensive exam. If failed to do so, he/she can avail another chance. The scholar must clear the comprehensive exam to present his/her thesis proposal. After the acceptance of thesis proposal by the evaluation committee, the scholar can officially start his/her research.
