Department of Physical Therapy And Rehabilitation Sciences
Physiotherapy is a vital pillar of the modern healthcare system — a science of healing and an art of caring. It focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of functional impairments related to the musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems. It plays a key role in managing conditions associated with pain, edema, limited mobility, structural imbalances, postural issues, and psychosomatic symptoms.
Physiotherapists employ evidence-based approaches to restore movement, promote recovery, enhance functional independence, and improve quality of life. The scope of physiotherapy extends across the entire human lifespan and includes:
Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation: Management of orthopedic injuries, joint dysfunction, fractures, and post-trauma cases through manual therapy, exercise, and electrotherapy.
Neurological Rehabilitation: Treatment of stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, and neuropathies using neuroplasticity-based interventions.
Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation: Enhancing respiratory and cardiac function, especially in ICU and critical care units, with airway clearance, breathing exercises, and mobilization.
Pre- and Post-Operative Rehabilitation: Preparing patients for surgery by improving baseline strength and function (prehabilitation), and accelerating recovery post-surgery through early mobilization, pain relief, and functional training. Common surgeries include joint replacements, spinal surgeries, cardiac procedures, and abdominal operations.
Sports Physiotherapy: Prevention and rehabilitation of sports injuries, performance optimization, biomechanical analysis, and return-to-play protocols.
Pediatric Physiotherapy: Managing developmental disorders, congenital conditions, and neuromuscular deficits in infants and children with child-friendly and play-based interventions.
Geriatric Physiotherapy: Focusing on age-related challenges such as osteoporosis, arthritis, balance disorders, fall prevention, and maintenance of independence.
Women’s Health Physiotherapy: Specialized care for antenatal and postnatal rehabilitation, pelvic floor dysfunction, incontinence, post-mastectomy care, and osteoporosis management.
Critical Care & ICU Physiotherapy: Supporting critically ill patients with chest physiotherapy, early mobilization, ventilator weaning, and prevention of ICU-acquired complications.
Treatment strategies include therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, postural re-education, electrotherapy modalities, hydrotherapy, gait training, ergonomic advice, and patient education. Physiotherapy not only addresses existing problems but also empowers individuals with preventive strategies and long-term self-management tools.
