Introduction

Sociology is the scientific study of society. It covers all aspects of society like human behavior, social institutions, social action, social change and social problems. Sociologists investigate structure of groups, organizations and societies and the way people interact within these contexts. Since human behavior is shaped by social factors, subject matter of sociology ranges from intimate family to a hostile mob, from the division of society on the basis of race, gender and social class to shared beliefs of a common culture and from sociology of social work to that of sports. In fact, few fields have such relevance and scope for research, theory and application of knowledge.

Sociology provides many distinctive perspectives on the world, generating new ideas and criticizing old ones. It also offers a number of research techniques that can be applied virtually to all aspects of social life like emotions, family, education, street crimes, delinquency, war and peace, etc. Sociology is gaining more and more importance with the passage of time because society is becoming more complex and new social problems are emerging. Trained sociologists are the need of the hour for maintaining the smooth functioning of social systems, social life and society.

The Department of Sociology and Rural Development seeks to equip the students with sociological knowledge to think critically about social world and prepare them for advanced education and research.

• To provide students a broad and solid foundation to explain key sociological concepts
• To equip students with the knowledge about social phenomena and social world to achieve academic superiority and develop their critical and analytical skills.
• To enable the students to conduct social research to highlight the social issues regarding how this social world works.
• To enable the graduates to share knowledge and information with various segments of society and find career paths in a wide numbers of possible fields.

Sociology is not merely an intellectual discipline; it is also a vast profession. Students who study sociology can join both government and private sectors in a variety of occupations like administration, education, social welfare, public health, law, journalism, etc. Sociologists can play a rich and diversified role in modern society. They can serve in a number of capacities such as teacher, researcher, administrator, policy maker, planner, consultant, social worker, program evaluator, coordinator, clinical counselor, personal manager, etc. They can work in areas as broad and diverse as the discipline they have chosen.
