Introduction

Physics (Greek: *physikos*) explores nature in a fundamental way, focusing on elementary principles and laws—formerly known as natural philosophy. It spans the smallest constituents of matter, such as quarks within protons and neutrons, to the vastness of the universe. Despite covering this immense scale, the core aim remains: to understand the structure of the natural world and explain its phenomena. The Department of Physics is committed to advancing the understanding and application of these fascinating aspects of nature, while offering a comprehensive and engaging curriculum for its students.

Established in 1986, the Department of Physics was originally located at the old campus of the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Muzaffarabad (now known as the City Campus). In 2003, it moved to its purpose-built facility at the Chehla Bandi Campus. The department houses well-equipped teaching laboratories for Solid State Physics, Electronics, Nuclear Physics, Computational Physics, and Spectroscopy & Modern Physics. In addition, specialized laboratories—such as the Solid State Nuclear Track Detectors (SSNTD) lab and the Semiconductor and Nanoscience lab—are expanding, providing students with valuable research opportunities.

The department’s research projects involve collaborations with leading institutions and R&D organizations in Pakistan, including the National Centre for Physics (NCP), Islamabad, and the Pakistan Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (PINSTECH). The Department currently offers M.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degree programs. These programs are designed to give students a strong grasp of fundamental concepts along with practical skills for real-world applications. The M.Sc. degree requires the completion of 67 credit hours.

The coursework includes lectures, laboratory experiments, group discussions, problem-solving sessions, seminars, and research projects. The M.Phil. program, launched in 2004, aims to address the shortage of highly qualified professionals in the field by cultivating independent researchers. The Ph.D. program further enhances this mission by producing advanced researchers and scientists. Currently, the department is home to seven Ph.D. scholars.
