The Kashmir Institute of Economics (KIE) holds a unique distinction within the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Established in May 1978, it predates the university itself by two years, making it the very first postgraduate department. KIE’s history reflects a commitment to evolving alongside the educational landscape. In 1990, it underwent a name change to Kashmir Institute of Development Studies, before returning to its original title in 1998.
KIE offers a comprehensive range of programs catering to students at various stages of their academic journey. Those seeking the highest level of qualification can pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Economics, a rigorous program spanning three years. For students aiming for a Master’s degree, KIE provides a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) in Economics, completed within two years. Undergraduates have the opportunity to enroll in a four-year BS program in Economics. Those with a B.Sc. 14 years degree or an Associate Degree may opt to enroll in the 5th Semester of the BS program.
KIE’s programs go beyond traditional classroom learning. Students are exposed to a diverse range of courses, both mandatory and elective. Workshops and conference courses provide valuable opportunities to engage with practical applications of economic theory. Developing research skills is a cornerstone of the KIE experience, culminating in a thesis for PhD and M.Phil programs (24 credits for PhD and 6 credits for M.Phil). Comprehensive oral examinations are another key component of these programs.
By combining a strong foundation in economic theory with practical applications, workshops, research opportunities, and rigorous examinations, KIE equips its graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in various economic fields.
Strong Faculty
KIE has an exceptional faculty, currently comprising 9 regular PhD faculty members with expertise in various branches of economics. The institute is set to enhance its strength with 3 more PhD holders expected to join. Faculty members have rich teaching and research backgrounds from leading international universities, covering microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, international economics, development economics, financial economics, and more.
Their active involvement in research and publication allows them to bring the latest insights into the classroom. Their dedication to academic excellence makes KIE a dynamic and stimulating place to study economics.
Co-curricular Activities
KIE emphasizes holistic student development by organizing conferences, seminars, symposia, and workshops. These events expose students to contemporary economic issues, foster intellectual engagement, and develop communication and analytical skills.
Conferences draw economists, policymakers, and industry experts, while seminars and symposia allow focused academic discussions. Workshops provide practical training in research methodologies and analytical tools, ensuring that students are career-ready.
