Prof. Dr. Abdul Rehman Khan

I completed my BSc from the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (UAJK), Muzaffarabad, followed by an MSc in Chemistry from Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU), Multan. I joined the Department of Chemistry at UAJK in 2002. In 2007, I started my PhD at the National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE)–Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, under the supervision of Dr. Fazli Rabbi Awan (Dy. CS), funded by the Indigenous PhD Fellowship (Higher Education Commission, Islamabad). My PhD focused on “Study of protein biomarkers, metabolites and metals in type 2 diabetes.” In 2010, I received the IRSIP fellowship and conducted part of my research at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute (SBMRI), Orlando, Florida, USA, under the mentorship of Dr. Zhen Y. Jiang (MD, PhD). At SBMRI, I validated a novel protein-biomarker (A1AT) for obesity, published in Cell Metabolism (IF=31). I received the Research Productivity Award in 2014 from the Pakistan Council for Science and Technology (PCST). I served as Chairman of Chemistry from 2019–2022 and in 2023. Currently, I serve as Professor at UAJK and as Principal Investigator, I lead a Pakistan Science Foundation-funded project on glycemic index in Pakistani rice (Grant: Rs. 4,143,200). Our Obesity and Diabetes Research Laboratory, inaugurated in June 2024, focuses on low-GI rice varieties and their role in managing diabetes and obesity. I have published 39 papers. I actively participate in workshops, symposia/conferences and reviewing HEC-Projects and manuscripts of several science journals including Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders etc.
