The Kashmir Institute of Economics is the first ever post-graduate department of the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir established in May 1978 (two years before the establishment of the University). In 1990, the Kashmir Institute of Economics was named as Kashmir Institute of Development Studies and later on in 1998 again re-named as “Kashmir Institute of Economics”.
The Kashmir Institute of Economics (KIE) offers PhD (3 years), M.Phil (2 years), M.Sc Economics (2 years) and B.S (4-year) programs in Economics and Islamic Finance. All Economics programs include compulsory courses, optional courses, workshops and conference courses research and grand viva. A thesis of 24 credits for Ph.D and 6 credits for M.Phil, and comprehensive oral examination are compulsory, while for MSc Economics, thesis of 6 credits is optional.

The Organizational Structure

The Institute consists of three wings that specialize in different activities as under;

2. Research Wing
3. Training Wing

Academic Wing

The Academic Wing coordinates the educational degree programs.

Research Wing

The Kashmir Institute of Economics involved in research. Scientific papers on a variety of topics have been published in national and International recognized journals. It has been recognized in the relevant circles that trend of students’ innovative research is fairly higher at Kashmir Institute of Economics,
University of Azad Jammu & Kashmir.

Training Wing

The training wing organizes training Programs, workshops, seminars and special lecturers by distinguished economists and scholars from time to time. Some recent events include; workshop on economics of wellbeing_ the first ever in Pakistan; special lecture on Quality of Food Situation in Pakistan, Presentation on Economics of Spiritual Human Capital and its Estimation Strategies, workshop on advance Data Analysis,SPSS and AMOS. Students and faculty are encouraged to attend useful courses and workshops.

Vision:

The Kashmir Institute of Economics aims to be one of the leading institutes of economic both at national and regional level by assisting and enhancing conducive environment for teaching and research. Institute will empower its graduates with knowledge and applied skills along with moral and ethical values to strengthen their community in a diverse and changing world.

Kashmir Economic Review [KER]

KER is a bi-annual reviewed ​journal of economics ​published by Kashmir Institute of Economics, University of AJ&K Pakistan. KER publishes scholarly articles on a multi-dimensional economy​ which cover core economics, ​theory, philosophy and empirical evidence.​ Papers on Islamic Economics, Divine Economics, Behavioral Economics and emerging paradigms​ relating to local, national and global issues are encouraged.​ First published in ​1984, ​KER is considered the first-ever research journal of Azad Jammu & Kashmir.

Divine Economics?

Divine Economics is a newly developed framework to study religion and economics in each others’ perspective. It was developed by Dr. Syed Nisar Hussain Hamdani in 1999. The framework offers insights for developing new models and variables for economics in the light of Holy Scriptures of Divine Religions. This framework has brought many attractive studies and data sets that have generated interest among economist and researchers of world renowned universities including Harvard and London School of Economics, Chapman University, George Mason University, Virginia University, Al-Mustafa International University, Cambridge University UK.
