The Department of Biotechnology was established in February, 2013 at University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Muzaffarabad at Chehla Campus. Biotechnology is an interdepartmental venture offered jointly by the Departments of Zoology, Biochemistry and Plant sciences. It is a teaching and research department of the University and initially only M.Phil and Ph.D programs were offered in a number of contemporary disciplines such as Animal biotechnology, Plant biotechnology, Medical biotechnology and Microbial biotechnology. The Department of Biotechnology was launched by the personal efforts and interest of the Prof. Dr. Dilnawaz Ahmad Gardezi, Former Vice Chancellor, UAJK. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nasim Khan was appointed as the Founder Chairman of Biotechnology Department.
The department offers a prospect to the students from all areas of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir to participate and excel in the emergent field of Biotechnology. The programs are designed to expose the students to recent exciting developments in the area of genetic engineering and biotechnology and their exploitation in industry, agriculture and medicine. During very short time period, the department has started regular classes in these degree programs after getting approval of syllabi by Advanced Board of Studies. The first batch of M.Phil and Ph.D. degree programs has completed their thesis research in different disciplines of Biotechnology. The department is in unmet need to acquire fulltime high qualified faculty and also equipped research laboratories to ensure the quality education to meet the national and global demands and standards. Because of the relevance of some of the research programs, interaction and collaboration with other institutions has been achieved within the country and abroad. In the next few years, with the ongoing acquirement of new academic staff members, these numbers are expected to rise extensively. Students completing their degree in biotechnology are well prepared for professions as research scientists in industry, clinical laboratories, research and teaching institutions.
