English Department

The Linguistics and Literature program is located in the Department of English. The Department offers new fields of study such as linguistics, along with more traditional field literature. The aim of the program is to promote broader vision through an inter-disciplinary approach. The B.S.English is a four year program divided into eight semesters. The Masters in Linguistics and English Literature (M.A) is a two-year program divided into four semesters. A great deal of emphasis is placed on development of Applied English Language skills, and on producing professionally competent language teachers who are equally conversant with English Literature.

The Department also offers M.Phil and PhD programs in Linguistics with the aim to promote research on local languages, such as Urdu, Pahari, Hindko, Gojri, etc. The Department regularly publishes a research journal in linguistics, Kashmir Journal of Language Research (KJLR), which is the only linguistics related journal in Pakistan placed in category “W” by the Higher Education Commission. The faculty of the Departments has expertise in Applied Linguistics sub-fields such as: Phonetics and Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics, Conversation Analysis, Corpus Linguistics, Register Analysis, Second Language Acquisition, and Sociolinguistics. The Department has the highest student enrollments in the M.Phil and Ph.D Linguistics programs of any other university in Pakistan.
